Stonesthrow Pump Station: Trenchless Technology Solutions

Newark, DE
New Castle County

Stonesthrow Pump Station is a regional county sanitary sewer pump station that was built in the 1970s to serve a residential development area. The antiquated pump station coupled with the aging of the station created a maintenance burden for the County.

A site across the street was purchased to build a new station that would be easier and safer to maintain and aesthetically pleasing. The relocation of the existing sanitary sewer pump station (that was located within a road right of way) required a unique approach to removal and abandonment including extending the sewer inflow gravity piping and discharge sewer force main piping to the new pump station site, which is located on the opposite side of the road.

The evaluation of various force main replacement alternatives included a new alignment location and trenchless replacement at the existing force main alignment. The design also included innovative existing gravity sewer extension via trenchless technologies to the new pump station, connection to the existing sewer force main, and measures for maintaining pump operations during the transition of the existing station abandonment to the new station operation while minimizing disturbance to the existing state road and traffic operations.
